.Ashley Cole has withdrawn from the
England squad to face
Montenegro and
Poland in the upcoming
World Cup qualifiers, the FA has confirmed.
The
Chelsea left back was named in Roy Hodgson's initial 23-man squad for
the doubleheader, but he suffered a rib injury in the club's 3-1 win
over Norwich City on Sunday. Arsenal defender
Kieran Gibbs has been called up as his replacement.
Cole,
who earned his 105th cap for England against Ukraine in September,
underwent a scan on Monday morning and is now set for a
yet-to-be-confirmed amount of time on the sidelines.
Chelsea
manager, Jose Mourinho, said of the injury on Sunday: "He is having this
little problem for quite a while. He was feeling it hard in the ribs,
but I didn't [substitute] him because of that."
England currently
tops Group H by just one point following the 1-1 draw with Ukraine, and
needs to win both of its final group games to be sure of securing a
place in next summer's World Cup.
The Three Lions host Montenegro on Friday before Poland arrives at Wembley on Oct. 15.
